When students prepare for jobs that may not yet exist, colleges need to equip them with varied and innovative skill sets. Cialfo and Times Higher Education hosted the Liberal Arts Education webinar, which saw Presidents of three leading Liberal Arts colleges in the USA address the concerns of international students regarding job opportunities and pathways.

Dr. Jeffrey R. Docking, President, Adrian College, Kent Devereaux, President, Goucher College, and Dr. La Jerne Terry Cornish, President, Ithaca College, shared insights on these aspects:

  • How interdisciplinary education hones employability skills like critical thinking, creativity, and agility.
  • The opportunity to gain professional experience, and freedom to change career-related decisions during the course.
  • The role of lifelong learning in enhancing career prospects, and how these colleges support such continued education.
  • How Liberal Arts colleges create career pathways for students by connecting them with the leading industry players, and the alumni community worldwide.

Here's what they said during the session:

“It’s our ethical obligation to not just educate students but launch them into a successful career, however they define it.”

Kent Devereaux, President, Goucher College

“Admissions counselors are getting more questions about ROI. Will my education lead to a job - not long-term but immediately after graduation?”

Dr. Jeffrey R. Docking, President, Adrian College

“What you think you may want to do when you walk in the door may not be what you do once you leave or even end up being the career that you thought you would have.”

Dr. La Jerne Terry Cornish, President, Ithaca College
